Reflect
on how the concept of Open Source content is compatible with
educational philosophies such as the concept of the democratization of
knowledge and development of an educated population:
Open Source content is compatible with educational philosophies because they are available for everyone to use. In education, we value the sharing of knowledge and ideas with other professionals in our field. When we find a great lesson or activity, we share it with others so their students can benefit from it as well. Education has always been a collaborative field in this sense. With this sort of open source content, app developers are sharing their tools with educational professionals. With the added benefit of reviews and user feedback, these applications can be tweaked and changed for the better at any point in time. This content is available to anyone with a device to access the application and are oftentimes free to use. This means that children and parents at home now have more access to quality educational materials which will ideally result in a more educated population.

I agree that it is so helpful to share and collaborate with other teachers. Open source is something that everyone can access and will hopefully embrace at home and in the classroom.
ReplyDeleteI think that availability to parents at home is huge, as they are often asking what they can do at home for extra help. This content being available is perfect for those times. As you said though, ideally they would search it out and use it. We just have to hope that they actually do.
ReplyDeleteLisa, I should have read your post before I tried to answer this week's reflection. You provided such a clear application of a question that I found to be incongruous to every other assignment so far. I can see how you must make material accessible to every kind of learner in your classroom.
